She's far too young for a relaxer.. Those chemicals burn and hurt adults, why make a child suffer through that.
If you don't want to work with her natural/nappy texture - (which is not bad - just requires extra work) - then press it gently.. You can keep her in cute braids (her own hair - not weeved)

You can blow dry it straight...but your child really needs to learn how to care for curly hair she'll have it forever probably. Most of the products for curly hair are good and let it air dry...don't you dare blow dry it(unless you want it to be straight)... it'll get frizzy. :) Good luck

My mom used to hot comb my hair when I was really little. Then when I turned 5 or 6, she took me to the salon to get a relaxer. They have relaxer kits for children which work well. Of course, now days, a lot of people like the natural look. That could be an option for you. There are lots of books out there about caring for natural hair.

Don't do either. Do her hair in cute braids and ponytails. Do the cute styles while you still can.

Just put Zero Frizz on it and let it dry naturally, if it is long, hang some metal hair clips on the ends to let it dry a little looser. Otherwise, use a big (huge) round hairbrush and blow dry it while wrapping it around the brush. I have naturally curly and kinky hair and this has been the best remedies for me. Perming and straightening caused my hair to break off at the scalp.

young girls with the afro look that gets put into a pom-pom look is really cute! And it is the safest since it's the natural state but if her hair is painful to comb than I suggest you hot comb it first, than maybe when shes 8 or 9 you can start relaxing her hair.

Let me say this first. Nappy/kinky hair is not frizzy hair. Nappy/kinky hair may not be curly. My answer assumes that she has Afro-kinky hair.
Please don't relax her hair. She's only five. IMO it's best not to give a child a relaxer until she is fully capable of taking care of her own hair.
I don't think hot combing is a good idea either, especially if she is active.
What most parents do is they wash and condition the child's hair once a week, detangle with a wide tooth comb, put a little moisturizer on the hair and scalp, blow dry the hair with low heat using a dryer with a comb attachment, brush and put it up in ponytails. If you don't want to blow dry the child's hair, you can cornrow or flat twist it and let it air dry.

i think you should perm it before its to late because if you wait to long it will be to late and if you try to put a perm in her hair when its too late it would probably fall out so i would say give her one now

If it must be done then use a relaxer specially made for children. You can go to a Sally's Beauty Supply to buy it. I only leave it on for about 10 minutes or else it will make the hair too straight and unnatural looking.

The best thing if you want it straight is to hot comb it but a flat iron can work also please do not perm her hair at this age unless you are taking her to a professional and they will even tell you the best thing is a hot comb or flat iron
