Do you have any tips on how to paint hair in oils or acrylics. What brushes are best?

Block in the larger color masses and then use a smaller brush for highlights. On a 30x30 canvas I would use a one inch brush and finish with a quarter inch brush.

You can check out my web site http://www.piotrwolodkowicz.com and look at a painting called portrait of Krysia and that is exactly what I did. the colors I used were raw umber, ultramarine blue and yellow ochre and titanium white.

It depends on how big your painting is, and how much detail you require. I use either a pointed round, or a the sharp edge of a flat brush which you can twist a bit to make a fatter/thinner line.

As mentioned above, begin with the darkest base colour and work up to the mid-tone then the highlight, in that order. Define your light source by painting highlights only on the surface that receives the light. Use more detail in the surface that is closest to the viewer, less as the surface recedes.

Have fun!
