Any tips for ensuring a home hair-dye kit goes on evenly?

If you have long hair, do sections and make sure you dye brush isn't to saturated with dye.

Take a small section/strand of hair and brush the dipped dye brush starting from scalp then to tip of hair. Start from top of the head and work your way to the bottom.

Pin dyed sections up loosely on top of the head. Be careful not to let the long hair get into the eyes.

Hope this helps :)

My hair is very thick, although its short.

So I buy two bottles and start at the roots. I completely saturate all of my hair. Then I start in with the second bottle and make sure I have all of the ends done as well.

I've been dying my hair for about 13 years.

But heres some tips if you've never done it before.

First time coloring your hair? Choosing the right shade to complement your natural haircolor is the best way to get started.

If this is your first time coloring your hair, keep in mind the Rule of Color before you select a new haircolor. Learn some Clairol must-dos and when to touch up to keep your new haircolor looking fresh. Clairol will also show you how to use the product correctly to get the new haircolor you want.

Know the Rule of Color, Before You Color

The color of your hair right now (your "current color") + a new haircolor shade = your beautiful new haircolor.

To help you get started, first follow these simple steps from Clairol:

Determine your natural haircolor. If you've colored before, focus only on the new growth.

Decide on the new haircolor results you want.

Decide how long you want the new haircolor to last. Permanent (Level 3) Haircolor lasts until hair grows out, you change color or cut your hair

Select a shade that blends with your existing haircolor to create the new haircolor.

If you are going more than two shades lighter than your natural haircolor, you will get warmer results than perhaps desired. Call 1-800-CLAIROL (252-4765) to speak with a Clairol Expert Color Consultant.

If you've already colored your hair, start with that color. It works like this: Your starting haircolor (the color on your head right now) + a new haircolor shade = your beautiful new haircolor.

If you have previously colored your hair and are looking to go more than one shade darker, please call 1-800-CLAIROL (252-4765) to speak with a Clairol Expert Color Consultant.

Creating new haircolor is teamwork! Your old color works with the new color to create the new haircolor you want to be.

Must Dos

Read the Clairol product instructions carefully from beginning to end.

Do an allergy patch test. A small percentage of people may have allergic reactions to haircolor, which can develop unexpectedly even if you've colored before without occurrence. Clairol recommends you always do an allergy patch test 48 hours before each haircolor application.

How to test. First, mix a small amount of the haircolor according to the package instructions for "Allergy Test." (Be sure to tightly recap the remaining product in the bottle.) Then apply a small patch (about a nickel's worth) of haircolor with a cotton swab or cotton ball to the inside of your elbow. Leave uncovered and undisturbed for 48 hours. Save the remaining mixture to use for your strand test.

Results: If no redness or irritation appears after 48 hours, go ahead with your haircolor application. If any redness, burning or itching occurs, you may be allergic and must not color.

If you have any questions regarding an allergic reaction, call Clairol Expert Color Consultants at 1-800-CLAIROL (252-4765).

Take a strand test to preview the new haircolor you'll get before applying the haircolor. Because the new haircolor is a combination of your hair's current color and the haircolor shade you add, a strand test helps you know how much time it takes to get the new haircolor you want. Follow the Clairol instructions inside the box of haircolor.

If you're craving a new look:

Flip through fashion magazines to spot colors you like that might be good for you. Hold colors against your skin. Like them?

Check out your friends. Are their looks starting points for you? Do they give you ideas for creating a more colorwonderfulé–³?you?

Enter the Clairol and experiment with a variety of haircolors and styles. Or call your Clairol Expert Color Consultant at 1-800-CLAIROL (252-4765). Clairol is here to help.

Be sure to use the shade chips on the side of the carton as your guide to select a new haircolor that will be right for you.

Do turn the package over and check out the Clairol Shade Selector on the side. Locate your "starting color." The chart shows approximately what new haircolor you'll get if you use that haircolor.

Time for Touch Up

Keep your new haircolor looking fabulous! When roots start to show, it's time to re-touch them to match the rest of your haircolor.

Here's when you can expect to re-color your hair:

Four weeks after coloring your hair, check for new growth at your temples and around your hairline. Do a re-touch or root application when é—„?inch of new hair shows, usually about 4-6 weeks. For more on retouching, check out Color Care for tips on keeping your new haircolor looking fresh.
