i started out with a short, spikey cut....and im JUST to the point where I can start parting it on top of my head....some layers have already been cut into it....

Go to a good stylist who can get to know your hair so as it progresses they know what the heck to do with it. Mine's finally below my ears.

I'm pretty sure that you are looking forward to the part when your hair starts flipping. Use gel and keep brushing your hair to straighten it out. You will go through a phase where your hair looks funny though. I know alot of guys with long hair.
